Incapable of solving his country’s multiple problems and having governed over the collapse of the French post-colonial empire in Africa, President Emmanuel Macron is always desperate for relevance in this complex geopolitical world.
While he hasn’t been able to achieve that, he has found that the ‘next best thing’ for him is to be constantly in the USAID-media waging an imaginary war of his own making.
Right now, Macron is blasting Putin in the press after the Kremlin sternly warned him not to threaten it with nuclear rhetoric, making comparisons with Napoleon’s failed attempt to conquer Russia.
In a TV address on Wednesday (5), Macron alerted that Russia was rearming quickly and, Macron speculates, could attack other countries unless deterred, including with the ‘French nuclear umbrella’.
Reuters reported:
“’I know President Putin well. If he’s reacting like that, it’s because he knows what I said is true’, Macron told reporters at an EU summit in Brussels.
‘He’s making a historical error: Napoleon waged conquests. The only imperialistic power I see in Europe right now is Russia’, he said, responding to a question posed by a Russian journalist in exile in France.”
Against all evidence, Macron insists Putin betrayed his word after the Minsk agreements in 2014.
“He also said the reactions in Moscow on Thursday were probably so vociferous because Russia’s intentions to continue waging war with Europe eventually, if a rushed peace treaty in Ukraine is signed, had been uncovered.
‘He was probably piqued by the fact we’re exposing his game’, Macron said.”
BBC reported:
“France and the UK are the only two countries on the European continent which have nuclear weapons. Currently France has just short of 300 nuclear warheads, which can be fired from France-based aircraft or from submarines.
The UK has about 250. The big difference is that the French arsenal is sovereign – i.e. developed entirely by France – whereas the UK relies on US technical input.
[…] Until now French nuclear doctrine has been built around the threat of a massive nuclear response if the president thought the ‘vital interests’ of France were at stake.
The limits of these ‘vital interests’ have always been left deliberately vague – ambiguity and credibility being the two watchwords of nuclear deterrence.”
