Secretary of Education Linda McMahon was on “Fox News Sunday” with Shannon Bream to discuss a variety of topics, including giving more control to States for education. The Secretary also discussed the administration’s issues with Harvard and transgender bathrooms in Virginia schools.
“You are in the unique position of being a cabinet secretary who came in with kind of the mission to get yourself out of a job. How is that going?” Bream asked.
“Really, what we are doing is returning education to the states. So, what I want to do is to see what the best practices are around our country from many of our different kinds of schools,” McMahon said.
Secretary McMahon explained that the legal battle with Harvard was really about protecting students and keeping them safe from things like antisemitism. She also commented that higher education should include truth and open debate.
“Let’s talk about some of these legal battles, so Harvard. A ruling by a federal judge against the administration last week saying essentially you can’t block the funding that was being blocked or frozen,” Bream commented.
“What we said to Harvard from the very beginning is we want universities to be those places of truth seekers, of open debate, of open ideas, but Harvard is actually preventing that. You can’t take away the freedom of speech of one group, to say that you are giving it to another group,” McMahon said.
“This case was never about freedom of speech. This was about safety on campus. This was about antisemitism. This was about Title 6 violations. Harvard knows that,” McMahon explained.
Secretary McMahon also explained that transgender bathrooms in some school districts are creating a very disturbing environment for female students and that common sense policies should be used to protect them.
“These numerous northern Virgina districts that are just outside of the area here. Suburbs of DC and you guys have put them on high alert notice that they are potentially going to lose reimbursement of federal funding based on their policies allowing people to access facilities based on gender identity,” Bream commented.
“Our students, our girls should not be going into their locker rooms not knowing what they are going to find,” McMahon continued.
“Common sense would just tell you that is wrong and that’s not what should be happening in either our high schools or in our universities either,” McMahon continued.
