Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ former chief of staff has announced a primary campaign to unseat Nancy Pelosi.
Tech entrepreneur Saikat Chakrabarti, who also worked for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 campaign, claims that “both parties” ignore “the kind of biggest problems facing most people.”
Speaking to CBS News, Chakrabarti said he wants to tackle the “cost of living and economic opportunities.”
“If that could happen then, in that lower change environment, what could happen right now?” Chakrabarti asked.
Pelosi was first elected when the tech millionaire was one year old.
“I’ve got a lot of respect for a lot of what Nancy Pelosi has accomplished in her time in Congress, but I just think we’re in a different era now,” said Chakrabarti.
“I’m not sure she realizes the level to which the average person — or even most people in this country and in San Francisco — are really feeling the squeeze of just how expensive these big essentials have gotten,” Chakrabarti continued.
According to the report, Chakrabarti is responsible for recruiting Ocasio Cortez to run for office.
“In 2018, the former software engineer who left Wall Street and Silicon Valley success behind spearheaded a political action committee to bring new voices to Washington,” the report says.
Chakrabarti is making universal guaranteed healthcare and tuition free community colleges central to his campaign.
