Far-left Rep. Ilhan Omar has indicated that growing numbers of Democrats are ready to abolish the Department of Homeland Security if or when they return to power.
Speaking at a town hall meeting on Thursday, Omar said that while most Democrats were resistant to the idea when she arrived in Congress in 2019, the policies of the Trump administration are changing their minds.
“What I will say is that there is an easier conversation happening today than six, seven years ago when I got to Congress, about what we need to do with ICE, which is to abolish it,” Omar told her audience.
“There is a lot of conversation about what the dismantlement of the Department of Homeland Security should look like.”

Earlier this month, Omar unloaded on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency as it stepped up its operations in her home state of Minnesota.
Describing ICE as an “occupying paramilitary force,” she also called for the prosecution of Trump advisor Stephen Miller, who is widely seen as an architect of U.S. immigration policy.
“When we say there needs to be accountability for the architect of the terror we are facing in Minneapolis and so many other cities, which is Stephen Miller, we mean we need accountability for him now.”

While many Democrats have called for abolishing ICE, the agency is only one of several operating under the DHS umbrella.
DHS is responsible for a wide range of national security and public safety functions beyond ICE’s immigration enforcement role.
The department oversees agencies such as Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Secret Service, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).
Together, these entities handle border security, airport screening, disaster response, cyber defense, protection of government officials, and efforts to safeguard critical infrastructure across the country.
